Hi! I’m Mia. I’m nine and I live in London with my mum, my dad, my brother Ollie and our dog Biscuit. My favourite autumn night is Bonfire Night. It’s on the 5th of November.
Bonfire Night is very old. In 1605 some men wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. They hid barrels of gunpowder under the building, and a man called Guy Fawkes guarded them. But the king’s guards found him, and the plan failed. People in London were happy, and they lit bonfires to celebrate.
Now we celebrate every year. In the evening we go to the big bonfire in our park. It’s cold and dark, so I wear my coat, my woolly hat, my scarf and my gloves. Biscuit stays at home with Grandma, because dogs don’t like loud bangs.
Then the fireworks start. Rockets fly up into the sky and go "Bang!" The sky is red, green and gold, and everybody says "Ooh!" and "Aah!" Dad buys us toffee apples and hot chocolate. Mum lights a sparkler for me, and I write my name in the air with it. I always wear my gloves!
On the way home Ollie and I say the old rhyme: "Remember, remember the fifth of November!"
