What do you know about Halloween?

Hi! I’m Oliver. I’m ten and I live in York, in the north of England. Halloween is on the 31st of October, and it’s one of my favourite days of the year.
A week before Halloween, Mum and I buy a big pumpkin. We carve a funny face on it and put a candle inside. Now it’s a jack-o’-lantern! Did you know that a long time ago people in Scotland and Ireland made lanterns from turnips, not pumpkins?
In the evening my sister and I dress up. This year I’m going to be a vampire and my sister is going to be a black cat. We go trick-or-treating with Dad. We knock on our neighbours’ doors and say "Trick or treat!", and they give us sweets.
Then we go to a fancy dress party at my friend’s house. We play apple bobbing: there are apples in a big bowl of water, and you must catch one with your teeth, without your hands. It’s very funny and you get very wet!
Halloween isn’t a day off school in Britain. But five days later, on the 5th of November, there is Bonfire Night, with big fires and fireworks. I love autumn in Britain!
